Installation Exhibition at Vitrine, 300 Flinders St, Melbourne, 2017
Coming Apart (at the Seams) is an installation of deconstructed, old clothing and embroidered text as the media for a recombinant and reconstructed artwork.
This project highlights the problem of waste clothing in our society in its use of discarded clothing as the medium.
This work also addresses issues around identity and the human form. The shapes of the unpicked garments suggest bodies. The fabric and style of the garment suggests possible identities. Who wore these clothes? What are their stories?
Only part of the work is completely visible at any time as some pieces of fabric are tied up in bundles according to the garment, to which they originally belonged.
This project is ongoing as more clothes are unpicked and added to the installation. It’s a very slow process to unpick garments with a seam ripper – and this is a performative part of the artwork (see video below).
